Early Life

Sean John Combs was born on November 4, 1969, in Harlem, New York City. He was raised in Mount Vernon, New York, by his mother, Janice Combs (nรฉe Smalls), a model and teacher’s assistant. His father, Melvin Earl Combs, served in the U.S. Air Force and had connections to convicted drug dealer Frank Lucas. Tragically, Melvin was shot and killed when Sean was just two years old. He grew up in a challenging environment and has one sister.

Raised in a Catholic household, Combs served as an altar boy during his youth. He graduated from Mount Saint Michael Academy, an all-boys Catholic school, in 1987, where he played on the football team and celebrated a division title in 1986. His childhood nickname, “Puff,” came from his tendency to “huff and puff” when he was upset.
